Women’s Day Event Unites Over 100 Women Across Cape Town

Cape Town – More than 100 women from communities across the metro gathered at the Cape Town Civic Centre last week for a Women’s Day celebration hosted by the City’s Community, Arts and Culture Development Department.

The event, held in the mayoral banqueting hall, brought together women from Joe Slovo, Wallacedene, Scottsdene, Wolwerivier, Pella, Valhalla Park, Atlantis, Bonteheuwel, Langa, Brooklyn and Fisantekraal. It combined entertainment with thought-provoking discussions on challenges affecting women, including mental health awareness and the ongoing fight against gender-based violence.

Guest speakers highlighted the importance of resilience and empowerment, with one sharing her personal journey as a woman in business, inspiring those in attendance to continue breaking barriers.

Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham, praised the women of Cape Town for their contributions while acknowledging the ongoing struggles they face.

“We celebrate the remarkable women who are making an impact in their communities in their own way. At the same time, we are mindful that there is still a lot of work to do to ensure women in our communities are safe wherever they go and treated fairly. Everyone has a role to play in creating a more gender-balanced city, and I want to encourage the women of Cape Town that we see you and we stand with you,” she said.

The theme of this year’s event, Accelerate Action, was a call to strengthen initiatives that advance gender equality and community development.

Councillor Higham also urged communities to take collective responsibility for public resources.

“Here in the City of Cape Town, we are not just talking: we are working every day to put these ideas into practice, but we cannot do it alone. We invest millions into facilities, and they belong to you. I encourage you to take ownership of your clinics, libraries, halls, sports fields and parks. We must commit to safeguarding these spaces for us all,” she added.

The Women’s Day celebration was a reminder of both the progress made and the work that still lies ahead in building safer, inclusive, and thriving communities for women in Cape Town.
