Western Cape taxi operators urged to register for council election
By: Dizindaba Staff Reporter | Western Cape
The Western Cape Mobility Department has called on e-hailing and metered taxi operators to register to vote and nominate candidates for the first election of the E-hailing and Metered Taxi Council – Western Cape (EMTC-WC).
Registration and nominations are open until 22 October 2026 as part of the province’s October Mobility Month.
The new council aims to provide a representative platform for approximately 3,500 operators across the Western Cape to raise concerns affecting their businesses and the industry.
Key issues expected to be addressed include operating licences, compliance, working conditions and challenges related to e-hailing platforms.
Muneera Allie, Head of Communication at the Western Cape Mobility Department, said operators play an important role in keeping the province moving and should have a credible voice in decisions affecting their sector.
The department will facilitate the election process, verify operating licence information and coordinate registration. It will not select candidates, campaign for individuals or influence the outcome.
Eligible operating licence holders can register online or visit designated department offices in Athlone, Cape Town or George.
