Statement on the passing of Councillor Xolile Kalipa
It is with great sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Councillor Xolile Kalipa. Councillor Kalipa was fatally shot in Kayamandi on the night of Sunday, 4 May. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation by the South African Police Service.
Councillor Kalipa was a much-loved and deeply respected community leader. He served as a Proportional Representation Councillor for the Democratic Alliance and was an active member of the Mayoral Committee, where he held the position of Portfolio Chairperson for Community Services. His contributions to the work of Council and his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of residents will be remembered by all who had the privilege to work alongside him.
Executive Mayor Jeremy Fasser expressed his profound shock and sorrow at the news, saying:
“I am devastated by the loss of Councillor Kalipa. He was a dedicated public servant, a voice for the voiceless and a pillar of strength in his community. His passion for uplifting our people – especially the youth and women as part of his Community Services Portfolio – was evident in everything he did. We have not only lost a colleague, but a friend and a true champion for social development.”
We encourage everyone to keep Councillor Kalipa’s family and loved ones in their thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. We also urge the public and media to respect their privacy as they mourn this tragic loss.
Councillor Kalipa will be dearly missed for his tireless work in community development and his steadfast representation of his constituents. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched.

On the afternoon of 6 May 2025, councillors, officials and family gathered in the Stellenbosch Town Hall for a heartfelt memorial service to bid farewell to our colleague and friend, Councillor Xolile Kalipa.
It was a solemn and moving occasion where Executive Mayor Jeremy Fasser, Speaker Quintin Smit and Municipal Manager Geraldine Mettler paid tribute to Councillor Kalipa’s life and legacy. They spoke warmly of his kind spirit, good heart, deep love for his community and his unwavering commitment to serving others.
Councillor Kalipa will be deeply missed, but his example of selfless service and compassion will continue to inspire us all.

Stellenbosch — The Stellenbosch community is reeling after the tragic passing of Councillor Xolile Kalipa, who was fatally shot in Kayamandi on the night of Sunday, 4 May. The South African Police Service is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
Councillor Kalipa, a Proportional Representation Councillor for the Democratic Alliance, served as the Portfolio Chairperson for Community Services on the Mayoral Committee. He was widely respected for his dedication to improving the lives of residents, particularly women and youth.
Executive Mayor Jeremy Fasser expressed his sorrow, describing Kalipa as “a dedicated public servant, a voice for the voiceless and a pillar of strength in his community.” A memorial service was held at the Stellenbosch Town Hall on 6 May, where colleagues, family and officials gathered to honour his memory.
