Cape Winelands Steps Into the Future with Digital Innovation Boost

The Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT) hosted a Digital and Innovation Workshop in Worcester to support municipal officials in strengthening Local Economic Development (LED) and ICT capacity across the Cape Winelands.

The workshop focused on accelerating digital transformation through the province’s Growth for Job Creation (G4J) priorities, highlighting the role of municipalities in driving technology adoption, improving service delivery, and boosting economic growth. Participants explored key technologies such as AI, blockchain, IoT, and cybersecurity, and how these can support entrepreneurship, attract investment, and address socio-economic challenges.

Discussions also unpacked the strengths of the Western Cape’s growing tech ecosystem, while identifying challenges like infrastructure gaps, limited connectivity, and access to funding. Through practical sessions, attendees analysed local economic data and identified opportunities to grow the digital economy, including strong mobile usage, rising interest in tech businesses, and partnerships with universities.

The workshop concluded with a focus on impactful digital projects, including smart city initiatives, digital skills development, support for startups, and improved e-government services. Overall, the session reinforced the importance of inclusive, scalable, and strategic digital solutions to drive sustainable economic growth and development.
