Thieving Trio Tripped Up in Tense Philippi Chase

A dramatic high-speed chase through the streets of Philippi ended with the arrest of three brazen suspects by the City of Cape Town’s Metro Police K9 Unit on Monday afternoon.

The pursuit began around 15:00 on Varkensvlei Road when officers spotted a vehicle reported stolen earlier in Mitchells Plain. When signalled to stop, the suspects sped off recklessly, weaving through traffic and posing a danger to others on the road.

The chase escalated as the suspects fled past the Siqalo Informal Settlement, onto Jakes Gerwel Drive and Govan Mbeki Road, allegedly pointing a firearm at the pursuing officers, who responded with gunfire.

The vehicle came to a halt on Old Lansdowne Road, and the suspects attempted to flee on foot. Officers swiftly apprehended all three men, aged 33, 41 and 45. Two unlicensed 9mm firearms with missing serial numbers, an imitation gun, and ammunition were recovered.

On the scene, two victims identified the suspects as having robbed them earlier that day, though only one has filed charges.

“These suspects were incredibly brazen, but our officers had the last word,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith. “We urge victims to lay charges—without this, suspects face fewer charges and lighter sentences.”

The arrest forms part of a broader enforcement effort. In the past week alone, Metro Police arrested 75 suspects, including 23 for drunk driving, and issued 2 623 notices. The City’s enforcement agencies made a total of 231 arrests and recorded over 40,000 traffic and by-law offences.

Meanwhile, Law Enforcement made 141 arrests and issued 8 043 fines, while Traffic Services recorded nearly 30,000 offences and impounded 157 public transport vehicles.

The City also confirmed that the Public Emergency Communication Centre responded to 1 612 weekend incidents, including 80 assault cases and 47 vehicle-related accidents.
