Khikhi Electrification Brings Power and Hope to Nearly 200 Gugulethu Homes
The City of Cape Town’s R1,7 million electrification project in the Khikhi informal settlement of Gugulethu is nearing completion, with 193 households set to receive safe, reliable electricity by the end of June 2025.
Led by the City’s Energy Directorate, the project forms part of the City’s broader commitment to expand service delivery and improve the lives of residents in informal areas. Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg, visited the site to assess progress and meet with local beneficiaries.
“This project is not just about infrastructure; it’s about dignity, opportunity and improving quality of life,” said Alderman Limberg. “Residents will now qualify for Free Basic Electricity (FBE) on the subsidised Lifeline tariff, allowing families to access electricity at no extra cost.”
More than 20 local workers were employed during the rollout, contributing to job creation in the area. Alderman Limberg shared how two families expressed joy at having power in their homes for the first time, allowing children and students to study after dark.
“Having electricity is especially important during the cold winter months. We thank the community and all stakeholders for their continued support,” she added.
The City encourages residents to help protect infrastructure by reporting suspicious activity to 021 480 7700. For service-related requests, visit www.capetown.gov.za/servicerequests, call 086 0103 089 (Option 3), email power@capetown.gov.za, or SMS 31220.
