From Stellies to Springbok Star – Stellenbosch Hails Rugby Hero Riley Norton

STELLENBOSCH – The Executive Mayor of Stellenbosch, Jeremy Fasser, welcomed home a local legend this week: U20 Springbok captain Riley Norton, fresh off his team’s triumphant Rugby Championship win in Italy.
In a nail-biting final, the South African U20 side edged out fierce rivals New Zealand – a proud moment for the nation, and especially for the town of Stellenbosch, where Riley’s sporting journey began.
From Rhenish Primary to Paul Roos Gimnasium and now a student at Maties, Riley has carried the hopes of his hometown onto the international stage, becoming a beacon of inspiration for young sportspeople across the municipality.
“Hy is ’n rolmodel vir jong sportlui regoor ons munisipaliteit – kinders wat groot drome droom danksy die voorbeeld wat hy stel,” said Mayor Fasser during the heartfelt reception.
Also present were Ward 22 Councillor Esther Groenewald, Riley’s proud parents, Municipal Manager Geraldine Mettler, and both incoming and outgoing Mayoral Committee Members for Youth, Sport and Culture – Ndipiwe Olayi and Tammy Kumm.
The group shared in Riley’s reflections on the tournament, the hard work behind the scenes, and his dreams for the future – which could include more Springbok caps and even higher honours in sport.
Adding to his impressive résumé, Riley was also part of the South African team at the U19 Cricket World Cup last year, underlining his reputation as a true multi-sport talent.
Mayor Fasser concluded the visit with a message of pride and encouragement:
“Hartlik geluk Riley! Namens die Raad van Stellenbosch Munisipaliteit en elke rugbyliefhebber in ons streek, wens ons jou alle sterkte toe vir wat voorlê.”
Indeed, Stellenbosch stands behind its star – a young man proving that local dreams can shine on the world stage.
