Heritage Day at Zeitz MOCAA: A Celebration of Art, Culture and Heritage

Heritage Day came alive at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) at the V&A Waterfront last week, as visitors gathered to celebrate South African heritage through art, culture, music and creativity.

The museum opened its doors to the public on 24 September as part of a special Heritage Day programme that gave visitors an opportunity to explore its exhibitions and take part in a variety of activities.

The Zeitz MOCAA building itself provided an important backdrop to the celebration. Housed in a transformed historic grain silo, the museum connected Cape Town’s industrial past with contemporary African art.

Throughout the day, visitors explored the museum’s galleries and took part in guided exhibition and architecture tours. The tours provided an opportunity to learn more about the artworks on display as well as the history of the building and its transformation into a contemporary art museum.

The Heritage Day programme also included activities that encouraged visitors to participate rather than simply observe. Teenagers and adults took part in a tote-bag workshop, while younger visitors were given opportunities to engage with art through creative activities.

An interactive Art Patrol experience also formed part of the programme, offering visitors a different perspective on the work that takes place behind the scenes at a museum.

The atmosphere extended beyond the galleries, with music and performances contributing to the day’s celebrations. Visitors could also enjoy food and drinks from local vendors at Makers Landing.

What made the event particularly significant was the way different elements of South African culture came together in one space. Art, architecture, music, food and history all formed part of the Heritage Day experience.

As I walked through the museum and observed visitors engaging with the different activities, I was reminded that heritage was not limited to the history we read about in books. It could also be experienced through art, buildings, culture and the stories shared between people.

The Heritage Day celebration at Zeitz MOCAA showed how a building with an industrial past had been given a new cultural purpose, becoming a place where African art and contemporary stories could be experienced by the public.

The event ultimately provided more than a day of free access to a museum. It created an opportunity for visitors to reflect on where South Africa had come from while experiencing the creativity and cultural expression that continued to shape the country.
