Stellenbosch Leaders Call for Urgent Action Against Rising Crime at Safety Engagement

Stellenbosch — A high-level safety and security meeting was held yesterday at Stellenbosch Municipality, convened by Executive Mayor Jeremy Fasser and Mayoral Committee Member for Protection Services, Councillor Stephanie Heneke. The engagement aimed to address growing concerns over crime and strengthen collaboration with law enforcement in the region.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including the newly appointed Cape Winelands District SAPS Commissioner, General Mocholochi; Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Minister Anroux Marais; SAPS leadership from the district; Stellenbosch Municipal Protection Services; the Municipal Manager; and representatives from private security and community safety organisations.

Mayor Fasser warmly welcomed General Mocholochi, expressing confidence that her leadership will invigorate policing efforts in the Cape Winelands. “We look forward to a constructive partnership that will benefit all communities in our district,” said the Mayor.

However, the session was more than just introductions. Mayor Fasser emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that residents are “tired of meetings and talk” and living in fear due to recent increases in petty crime and gang-related violence, especially in hotspot areas like Cloetesville.

“Crime is not unique to Stellenbosch, but the rise in gang-related activity demands decisive action from SAPS,” said the Mayor. While policing remains a national mandate, Stellenbosch Municipality has consistently supported SAPS through joint operations, intelligence sharing, patrol assistance, and providing access to its extensive CCTV network and 24-hour control room.

Mayor Fasser called on SAPS to increase visible policing, particularly in identified hotspots, and take stronger measures to protect communities.

Minister Anroux Marais reaffirmed her department’s commitment to supporting the municipality and facilitating further coordinated action. She echoed the call for accountability and visible policing, acknowledging the frustrations of communities who seek tangible results.

The Mayor concluded by welcoming General Mocholochi once again and pledging the municipality’s continued cooperation in pursuit of safer communities.

As Stellenbosch stands at a critical crossroads in its fight against crime, this engagement marks a hopeful step toward stronger partnerships and a safer future for all residents.
